How do I treat and prevent dark spots and ingrown hair after waxing?

I have dark brown spots on my hands and legs after I got waxing 10 years back. I exfoliate with a loofah every 3 days, however these spots have not lightened at all. Does this mean that these spots are in my dermis? Are they permanent? If not than how can I remove these spots? (Please suggest something other than Laser Therapy).

To avoid getting ingrown hairs you should exfoliate (which can be done in the shower with an exfoliating glove for example) and shave in the direction of hair growth if you prefer to shave. if you can hack it, opt to wax instead as this exfoliates the skin by removing the dead skin cells on the top of your skin whilst taking the hair from the root. Because hair is taken from the root, it grows back finer so is less likely to be an ingrown hair, and if it is it won't be very painful. As an alternative to waxing, you can exfoliate and epilate.

I choose to tweeze hairs that are ingrown because they really annoy me, so i scrape the skin until the hair is exposed enough to pull it out, and then treat it with a wet cotton pad with a drop of tea tree oil on it which is antibacterial so helps stop infection and the open pore turning into a spot. Careful not to leave scarring as this can look worse than ingrown hairs that most people can't see anyway. I have scars on my legs from ingrown hairs that i wish weren't there and I now have to use Bio-Oil everywhere. (you will know if a scar will be left or not according to whether you make yourself bleed - if you do there will be a scar).

Moisturise daily and use a moisturiser with a high SPF as these could be ';sun spots'; or ';freckles';. You my need to have them checked if they change a lot as this could indicate skin cancer. You should get moles checked as well if you notice changes as they are more likely to be cancerous than the rest of your skin.

If you are not used to doing fake tan, it can be VERY difficult. you could ask another question as to what the easiest fake tan to start out on is, or go for a spray tan. If your skin is a slightly closer colour to the dark brown spots it will make them less noticeable.

The actual waxing doesn't cause dark skin spots in itself. But waxing exfoliates the top layers of skin, leaving skin more vulnerable to the sun and tanning beds.

If you are taking antibiotics, on birth control or hormone replacement the skin can become sensitive to the sun (photosensitivity) and can cause it to change in pigment. If you are on one of these drugs, then I would suggest applying a sunblock daily to your skin, whether it鈥檚 sunny or not. Stay out of tanning beds, they鈥檙e not good for you anyway. But if you must, physically block the area that got waxed with a towel.
